Retirement Facitlity Hottingen Signage

The Swiss just do it better. One thing I have been looking at a lot and is becoming a thread of sorts here on campsite is the idea of reinventing or re-envisioning designed objects, which have become pedestrian or banal. This atypical wayfinding system designed by Tina Stäheli–Shinohara illustrates this perfectly. It falls somewhere between constructivist art and signage, and thus changes how we engage and use it. Equal parts art and information in my opinion would allow the user to be more connected to the information on the sign and be able to understand and apply that information more easily. Branding the 10,000 Lakes

Personal projects come in all shapes, sizes, and mediums, but Branding 10,000 Lakes sounds and is badass through and through. Minnesota designer Nicole Meyer has undertaking a gigantic, 27 year long side project, which is to design a logo for a lake a day of which there are ten thousand in Minnesota. The beauty here folks is that you aren’t going to have to wait nearly 3 decades to see this collection of gems because Nicole has already been cracking and has designed up a whole bunch of amazing logos so far.

Toyphabet

Simple idea for an alphabet made up of letterforms created by layering images of vintage toys. Illustrator Viktor Koen has a portfolio full of wonderful pieces that feature an awesome collage and color sense. Toyphabet as it is named has to be one of the coolest though.

Hip Hop Logo

This is one of those self initiated projects that cuts through all the client less clouds and kicks serious ass. Designer Christopher David Ryan created this logo for the nice broad mock client Hip Hop. He really nails it with the layering of the two component words, and the execution is all there. The letters just meld together into an unbreakable type mark.

From the days when print was God comes this little gem. This amazing World Atlas, scored at a thrift store, was designed by Herbert Bayer, along with Harry Gardines, Martin Rosenzweig, and Masato Nagagawa.

38 Feet Tall, 8400 Mosaic Tiles

The subway posters designed for SVA always amaze and delight. In this case the original poster design by Louise Fili was transformed into a 3 story mosaic. A transformation that may be miraculous, but not quite mystical, since the original poster was designed in a the style of a mosaic. However the final billboard size boasts 38 vertical feet and 8,400 tiles. Quite a stretch from the paper versions stuffed into displays throughout the MTA. An additional fact that I found to be pretty coincidental is that the arrow on the poster points to both the School of Visual Arts building on which it is constructed as well as Louise Fili’s own studio.


Just My Type

Who would have thought you could put 999 fonts in a 60 second video clip, and actually make it look good? This promotional video for Simon Garfield’s book Just my Type does exactly that. The book itself brings readers into the world of typography and even takes about many historic typographers and the affect their work had on typography in general. More than just a design resource this book raises the awareness of the power and importance to typefaces and the work that it takes to create and maintain them.

Golden Grid System

Responsive web design is becoming increasingly integral to all things built for the web these days. It is not enough to have a website and an app. it also needs to be possible for your users to log on from any mobile internet device. Whether it be Blackberry, Android, iPhone or a type of tablet having a sitebuilt with flexibility in mind is key.

Since responsive web design is still young there are few great resources for creating a simple functional folding grid system. Joni Korpi a Finish web designer has created the 960 Grid System of responsive site design perfectly named as Golden Grid System. The key features of GGS are the fluid grid, with folding columns, elastic gutters, and a zoomable baseline grid. In addition it comes with Golden Gridlet a script, which allows you to see the grid overlay so you can easily check your math.


House Industries & Heath Ceramics

Eames and Neutraface are contemporary typefaces based on classic design inspiration with some well deserved updates. The timeless numbers from these two fonts are now available as ceramic house numbers made in collaboration with House Industries and Heath Ceramics.

Godspeed Poster

The always impressive Studio on Fire created this amazing letterpress poster for ARTCRANK. The process behind the poster, or at least behind the design elements of the poster are the coolest part. Bike parts such as seats and cranks were inked up to make impressions. Once scanned the separate elements were manipulated to create the awesome typography you see here. I really love the use of old lithographic style flowers in the branding for British jewelry designer Taylor Black. The branding, collateral, and website were all designed by Interbang. Their packaging system is super simple and elegant, which really suits the companies aesthetic.

New Type York

I found this site probably about a year ago now, but never posted about it because it was in what seemed like a permanent hiatus. I happened to be looking through my type related bookmarks the other day and decided it was time to check back in and see if there were any developments, and much to my surprise. New Type York is back up and running with a “temporary” site until their new one is completed. I have to say though I am very pleased with the current design.


Google Web Fonts v2

In the web font game services like Typekit and MyFonts reign supreme, but I find as a designer working with an array of smaller clients that sticking to the open source fonts offered by Google Web Fonts is a better fit. All the fonts in the GWF library are 100% free and can be easily integrated into almost any site or web app, and is compatible with an increasingly large number of browsers. All this great stuff has gotten even better with the launch of Google Web Fonts v2. The new release has added increased search-ability, which is more necessary now because the new version currently has 185 families all including multiple variations.


Mad Brew Productions

Adam Hill designed this great branding for Mad Brew Productions. The concept of the branding is that the different sections or departments of Mad Brew are visually represented with three different hat icons. The engraving style of the icons and all the supporting type work play off of one another well.

Tegut

In this case I must quote my source Erik Spiekermann, “Supermarket brands don’t have to be ugly”. That is a true statement and the wonderful supporting example is of German supermarket chain Tegut. Their branding is anchored down by a proprietary typeface based on Spiekermann’s Officina Sans, and their other collateral elements include other of Spiekermann’s fonts along with ones from Mitja Miklavčič, and Christian Schwartz.
