The Kameren St. House fits all the necessary requirements for an urban dwelling and even a couple many of us have learned to live without. House in Pirque

Perched on a hillside in Pirque this house has been designed for a simpler type of living. Everything having it’s own place is an easy concept to grasp, but in practice only works if you don’t have too many things. This little cabin shows how to do it. Sneeoosh Cabin

Architects in Washington State, and Oregon seem to be able to attack our core needs as far as housing and create living spaces that coexist with nature instead of negating it. This house called Sneeoosh Cabin is a really fun example of this idea design by the folks of Zeroplus Architects. The shape and layout breaks what many people would refer to as conventions and creates this mix between a cabin and what can best be described as biodome aesthetic. The pairing melds beautifully into this rich textural experience of materials intersecting with one another.

City Cottage

To getaway you don’t always have to go a great distance. This little cottage built in Helsinki is only a little over a mile from their family home offers the perfect type of minimalist getaway in a small intimate little structure. Every detail, object and fixture had to be perfect, as the space is only 150 square feet. Low energy consumption and the natural setting of this house make it an ecologically sound vacation option when compared to driving or flying somewhere. Finnish culture holds nature in a place of great respect and that even comes through in their city planning where camping areas and parks are designed right into the fabric of cities. Also because of it’s small scale this little building makes virtually zero impact and can be powered entirely by solar energy. The design for the cottage was done by Verstas Architects a Helsinki based firm.

Roundy Residence

Of all the architects I have come across in my life Miller Hull Partnership has to be by far the best. Their aesthetic so perfectly blends comfort and function with modern and industrial. I really love this house specifically it really blends into it’s surroundings perfectly. The design itself has a protected central unit with longer glass space spanning off of it in two directions.

Coromandel Beach House

This utilitarian beach getaway in New Zealand was designed by Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects with a subtle rustic exterior and a magnificently crafted interior. The design also really maximizes the view with an aircraft carrier scale deck and a broad opening from the living space of the house directly out on it.

Eastside Addition

Usually when you see an addition to home it attempts to blend into the original structure perfectly and fails miserably. This project dubbed the Eastside Addition in Providence was designed by 3six0 Architecture. It is a 2-story addition, which is intended as a space for the couple to organize and keep their combined collections of books and memorabilia. Instead of stacking and piling it in any nook or cranny as they did before it allows them open well lit space to enjoy these things.

Nara Single Family House

Building a single family house on a small urban lot has so many restrictions and the level of difficulty to keep a project within a feasible budget is next to impossible. A small house a bit under 900 square feet offers a nice level of open plan living without doors, but ensures privacy and division through narrowing hallways and deliberately placed nooks. The architects who designed this house are ninkipen! a small Japanese based studio.

Waldhaus

This new house built in a pine forest in Brandenburg was designed to fit in with it surroundings both natural and manmade. In contrast it has details that make certain aspects stick out, such as the white painted window framing, which alludes to the stark white interior. The design of Waldhaus was carried out by Atelier St. I think by far my favorite part has to be the kitchen. It is the only part of the house where the raw color and texture of wood has been left and I think it really brightens up and makes that room feel more lively.

Mt. Bonnell

There are so many great details, which work together to make this house so functional. I can’t tell what idea I like better in this design by Mell Lawrence Architects, whether it is the puppy window, or the concrete steps. Also the artist studio on the property would be an amazing workspace to run a design studio from.

Refurbished Swiss Cabin

The melding of the history of this structure and the beautiful modern renovation is in my eyes a great illustration of Swiss culture and design both past and present. My favorite part are the exposed aged beams from the original structure. This perfect little cabin high up in the alps was designed by Personeni Raffaele Schärer and the amazing photos were shot by Tonatiuh Ambrosetti.

Lådan (Box)

Lådan is one of those modernist designs that supersedes age and becomes timeless. It’s name translates as box, but even in it’s practiced simplicity it holds a certain comfort and warmth that only a true legend like Ralph Erskine could envision. Elements that really make this design come alive are the ones that break out of the minimal palette and inject some whimsical shapes and textures into the house.

Week’nder Prefab

On Madeleine Island on Lake Superior Lazor Office constructed a vacation house called Week’nder Prefab. With a simple layout, galvanized steel roofing, and a small footprint this design is a great solution for the small budget of a vacation house. You can tell that after creating the FlatPak House Lazor has cracked the code of simple prefab construction.

Villa Plus

Poised just above sea level looking out onto the Baltic Sea, Villa Plus, not to be confused with Plus Pool is a nice simple modern home. Designed by architects Waldermarson Berglund the aesthetic is nautical meets modernism, with lots of finely crafted wood work, and plenty of wide format windows to enjoy the views out of. My favorite aspect has to be the use of wood clapboards both inside and out creating a nice play between the two separate environments.

Dependance House

Using similar construction and materials to that of a nice garden shed, this nice little studio sized house adds a minimal and well lit element to the the shed style residence. Facing one direction is a large format window which frames a nice view and keeps the house connected to it’s natural surroundings. The use of industrial grade materials and the simple utilitarian details are perfect in this design by SPEDstudio.

False Bay Writer’s Cabin

Recently I have seen quite a bit more architecture in the vain of cabins and vacation homes that cut through the conventions. Bigger is better and lavish is living. After living in New York City for a few years I have learned that space is a commodity, but like a $20 Martini you can make do without. From a closet sized room in a small apartment to an even smaller apartment I share with a girlfriend and a dog I have learned both to share, shed unneeded things, and above all maximize space.

I have posted about Olson Kundig Architects before mainly because there work is unique, slightly industrial while still being homey. The function and craft behind their work shows through. In the case of their False Bay Writer’s Cabin they have created a tiny minimal retreat, which when it is not being used can fold up and protect itself from the elements.

Maison BVA

In place of an old row house Maison BVA by dmvA blends the brick aesthetic of it’s surroundings with a playful design that maximizes light and the outdoors while also maintaining privacy. The windows on the facade are partially obscured by the brickwork giving the feeling of a sort of castle like structure. This could not be any further from the truth. The back half of the house is entirely transparent and looks out onto a nice green yard. The touches of color within the house peak out through the spaces in the brick as though they are taunting the drab neighboring houses.
