The Citrange juicer designed by Quentin de Coster is a beautiful response to the truth of fruit and juicing it. The axis at the center juices the fruit and simultaneously directs the juice into the funnel, which strains out the seeds. The color and shape are both beautiful and appropriate to it’s purpose and make it a simple tool to recognize among other utensils.

Today my work is slightly blurred and unfocused by my anticipation for the Frank Chimero talk that is part of the Fall Lecture Series put on by the SVA IxD department. I have always loved Chimero’s work and valued his opinion and voice on design and process. His blog is often a sounding board for his views on design, life and sometimes even happiness. Stay tuned for a short report from tonight’s talk.
This collaborative workspace entitled OPEN Studio looks to be a fun blend of young creative talent in the east end of London. They also have a silkscreen set up in there, which makes me super jealous. A nice balance of talent combining illustrators, a screen printer and a publisher all under one roof. I can’t wait for them to launch a website to learn more about there space.

Having chickens these days is so chic even in urban areas, so it was just a matter of time until something like this popped up. Cynicism aside, this is a beautifully crafted and thought out design, and would be my first choice if I was going to add some clucking friends to our family. This house in Sao Paulo Brazil has quite an amazing view. Juranda House is a beautiful minimalist town-home in the southern hemisphere was designed by Apiacás Arquitetos it has an awesome design that increases community and shared space of the house, which I really love.

Paul Rand has been highly inspirational to me and so many other designers of our moment. One of the best design thinking books I have read “Paul Rand: Conversations with Students”

I read an article in Dwell a few months ago about all the chemistry and work behind making these perfectly crafted Bolle Bottles, and it really made me happy to learn about the specificity and care with which many generations of craftsman can replicate the same amazing pieces.
Came across this awesome poster and lecture series called the Show and Tell Lecture Series at the Portland State University GD Dept. Frank Chimero did a truly bang up job on the poster, which is definitely what initially caught my eye.
The line up of both virtual and live appearances they have lined up is stocked with an overwhelming amount of skill and chutzpah! How come nothing this cool ever happened at my school? Some of the speakers are greats like Jessica Hische, Nick Felton, Mark Weaver, and many more. I really hope that they record the talks or at the least offer transcripts.

There is just something unexplainably awesome about perfectly milled and built in storage space. The liberation through available storage is something that has always entrigued and excited me. This commission entitled AZB Apartment by GENETO is a prime example of those things at work. All the detailing is very illustrative yet subdued which I really like. They had the choice to punctuate things with vibrant colors, but their choice to let the craftsman ship and the design speak for itself in white, black and natural wood tones elevates the design so much higher.

What an awesome take on a way-finding system for a public building. The movement and playfulness of all the shapes and type help to convey direction, but also give an airy more light feel to the whole thing. The Sydney based team at COLLIDER definitely has some environmental signage chops. I really hope to see more stuff from them in this vein soon.

I watched this little video by IDEO a few days ago, and I had waited to post it until I could really digest it and figure out my feelings on the subject. I still feel like I am apposed to all these new media types that intend to stamp out the printed word. First the Kindle, then the Nook, and now the iPad have done a mediocre job of creating a successful reading experience on screen. Skipping ahead to the future in this short film, we see three distinct and mutually beneficial paths outlined for what IDEO sees as The Future of the Book. I really love the parallel access to contextually related resources and content provided by “Nelson”. All three directions share an impeccable sense of design and very beautiful interaction. The gestures and motion feel very real without reinforcing the idea that reading on an e-book platform should adhere to the look and feel of printed materials.

I am really into ‘The Full Spectrum’ series so far. All the videos are extremely well produced and put together. They also seem to cover an awesome array of the creative and design world to talk about their work and how it interacts and is affected by color. The legend of Herman Miller needs little introduction, but as I clatter away on this keyboard from me trusty Aeron Chair I am reminded of the core values and level of excellence HM has and continues to stand for. I really love how Susan Lyons brings up the exploration of color and it’s connection to iterative design. Creating color palettes feels a little forced or a shot in the dark from time to time, but as Lyon’s explanation of the link between iterative design and the exploration and selection of the perfect color based on this trial and error system.
Sometimes, when my iPhone spacks-out I have the urge to downgrade to a much more minimal phone system. This one called John’s Phone by Amsterdam based product design studio John Doe would definitely be my first choice.

I have been obsessed with icons since I can remember. Their nature to clearly communicate such an array of things both intrigues and inspires me. Whether using an arrow on a way-finding sign or a website it says something in context of the space, environment and collaborative content. It could be saying the bathroom is that direction or if you click this link it will take you to past entries. Either way the field of icon design seems to have become so much more integral with the advent of IXD and UI that I continue to see unique and fun ways to approach icon design and usage. Hopefully as I find and collect more icons this will develop into a larger series of posts. For now here is a great series of arrow icons collected from websites.
This is a super clean minimalist flat in Amsterdam designed by the hyper talented i29 Architects. The sofa a genius little touch of color, which helps to very what could otherwise be a slightly grey interior. The beautifully milled built in cabinets on the walls also add so much value to this small space. Living in a tiny apartment myself I know how much one can yearn for lots of beautiful storage.

Arhcitects Miller Hull designed this wonderful modern home in northern Washington state with a view of the San Juan islands. This is possibly the most beautiful place on earth. I doubt that anyone else has a view that rivals the view from their kitchen. Let alone looking out past their stove.
The illustrations on these vintage matchbox labels from Czechoslovakia are so beautiful. The bold graphic nature and colors are really amazing, and the slight fading only makes them better. This piece is part of an awesome album over on flickr.

The Movie Icons is a project by a slightly hard to track down designer by the name of Timo. That aside these icons that distill two hour movies down into a single bold graphic are striking.
